From Potts Point Bookshop, handed me a gorgeous hardcover nonfiction book with a cabin in the woods on the cover—possibly my greatest weakness—Consolations of the Forest: alone in a cabin in the middle of Taiga, by Sylvain He has toured the world by bicycle, crossed the Himalayas on foot and, in 2003, he walked from Yakutsk in Siberia to Calcutta, India, retracing the journey of escapees from a gulag (also the subject of Peter Weir's film, The Way Back). The idea of going to ground alone in the forest, surrounded by silence, began to intrigue me. Dec 14, 2013 - The Consolations of the Forest: Alone in a Cabin in the Siberian Taiga; Sylvain Tesson. Dec 7, 2013 - The Consolations of the Forest: Alone in a Cabin on the Siberian Taiga The Consolations of the Forest By Sylvain Tesson Translated from the French by Linda Coverdale Publisher: Rizzoli Ex Libris Pub. Often matter of fact and full of vodka, Tesson settles into the taiga embracing the frozen landscape and appreciating the way of life on Lake Baikal. Sylvain Tesson's account of six months living alone in a ten foot cabin by Lake Baikal in Siberia is an idiosyncratic meditation on solitude and hermitage, although Siberia's It's also the most boozy nature book I've ever read, with Tesson downing shots with the woodsmen of the taiga, or just gobbling down the shots by himself before sliding around on the frozen turquoise ice of the lake.
